Seeker of Stars, by Susan Fish

Reviewed by Julie Falkner

The Seeker of this story is a boy who loves stars. He spends hours gazing at their beauty but his destiny is to succeed his rug-making father, dyeing and knotting wool until his hands too are "as dark and splintered as old camel skin." Yet still he dreams of the night sky... Then his world is unexpectedly turned upside down, and he leaves home to go study astronomy with the experts.

The star-struck boy has become a husband and father-to-be when one night an inexplicable new star appears in the heavens. What is its significance? Could his wife be right: could this be the herald of a long-promised Messiah? An astronomers' delegation is chosen to follow the star and learn its meaning, and our Seeker is thrilled to be included. But on the long journey he is filled with anxiety for the heavily pregnant wife he has left behind, apprehension about meeting Herod, and heartache over his damaged relationship with his brother Salvi. Can a starry pilgrimage heal his hurts?

Journey with Melchior in this retelling of the Magi story, and you'll find yourself experiencing the message of Christmas in a new way.
